Aaron Roberts, a space scientist at NASA Goddard, has created a set of equations to describe a kind of magnetic wave, known as an Alfvén wave, in the solar wind. Details here...

The International Space Station (ISS) is set to return over UK skies with bright passes during this month.

It has already been spotted crossing a few areas. Have you seen it?

Meteor: Possible Sighting In San Francisco

fireball is sighted in Northern California on the heels of a massive meteor explosion in Russia that injured 1,200 people

By Sky News US Team, in Los Angeles

A California science institute says it has received numerous reports of a bright streak of light over the San Francisco Bay Area, adding to the tally of recent sightings.

The Chabot Space and Science Centre in Oakland has been fielding calls describing what appeared to be a fireball flying westward on Friday night at around 7.40pm.

Sightings were reported throughout the region, from coastal communities to the Central Valley, nearly 100 miles away.

Scientists have not yet been able to confirm the object.

Chabot astronomer Gerald McKeegan told KGO-TV that the centre's large telescopes did not pick anything up during a stargazing event.

Mr McKeegan said the object was likely what is known as a "sporadic meteor" – a common event that usually happens away from human eyes, over oceans or unpopulated areas.

The reports came hours after a meteor exploded over Russia and injured more than 1,200 people, and an asteroid passed relatively close to Earth.

Another possible meteorite was said to have hit over Cuba earlier this week.

Reports coming out of the island nation said residents of the town of Rodas saw bright lights in the sky on Tuesday, followed by an explosion that shook buildings.

There were no reports of injuries.

Astronomers say smaller meteorites hit Earth five to 10 times a year but large meteors such as the one in Russia are far less common

Huge Asteroid To Skim Past Earth At 18,641mph

At eight times the speed of a bullet, an asteroid longer than four buses will fly closer to the Earth than any other on record.

A 150ft-long asteroid will skim past the Earth today - closer than any other near-miss on record.

The huge chunk of rock - so big it is capable of wiping out London - will travel closer to the planet than many satellites.

But while it should be visible as a tiny dot of light crossing the sky to those using binoculars, scientists say there is no chance it will hit Earth.

There is a remote possibility that it could collide with one of more than 100 telecommunication and weather satellites in fixed orbits.

Experts have been closely tracking the asteroid, 2012 DA14, since its discovery a year ago.

They say it will reach its nearest point to Earth at around 7.30pm UK time on Friday.

It will stay at least 17,200 miles (27,681km) away - easily far enough to be safe - but very close in astronomical terms.

Astronomer and asteroid expert Dr Dan Brown, from Nottingham Trent University, said: "It will be too faint for the naked eye but with binoculars it should be visible if you know where to look. It will be low to the northeastern horizon and moving quite quickly.

"You'll be able to see it pass from the constellation Leo to roughly the Plough, more or less from anywhere in the UK, and it will be bright for about an hour."

DA14 belongs to a dangerous family of near-Earth objects (NEOs) that are small enough to be missed but large enough to cause serious damage.

It was detected in February last year by La Sagra Observatory in southern Spain as it fell under the spotlight of the Sun's rays.

Travelling at between 12,427mph (20,000kph) and 18,641mph (30,000kph) - around five miles a second, or eight times the speed of a rifle bullet - the asteroid will fly inside the orbits of high geostationary satellites.

Duncan Smith: Pressure Grows Over £53pw Claim

A petition calling for the Work and Pensions Secretary to try life on benefits has been backed by almost 280,000 people. A petition calling for Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith to prove his claim he could live on just £53 a week in benefits has won overwhelming support. In an interview about changes to the welfare system, Mr Duncan Smith suggested he could get by on £53 a week, as one benefit recipient argued he was having to."If I had to I would," Mr Duncan Smith told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. The MP is the architect behind controversial reforms that started coming into force this week. He currently has an after-tax income of £1,600 a week.In the wake of the comment, almost 280,000 people have backed a petition on the change.org website, calling for the minister to live up to his claim for a year. That is more signatures than any other petition currently open on the Government's e-petition website.Dom Aversano, who set up the petition, told Sky News that people felt…See More

Welfare: Osborne Defends Benefits Shake-Up

The Chancellor insists that those who "get up in the morning and work hard" will be rewarded in the benefits shake-up.George Osborne will later defend the Government's controversial benefits shake-up - insisting Britain can no longer afford to reward people who do the "wrong thing".The Chancellor is to condemn the old system as "broken", warning Labour that they are out of step with public opinion on the issue. The intervention comes after 660,000 social housing tenants with a spare room began to lose an average £14 a week in what critics have dubbed a "bedroom tax".Wider welfare and tax changes coming into force this month will also see council tax benefit funding cut.And working-age benefits and tax credit rises will be pegged at 1% - well below inflation - for three years.Meanwhile, disability living allowance (DLA) is being replaced by the personal independence payment (Pip).Trials are due to begin in four London boroughs of a £500 a week cap on household benefits, and of the new…See More
